I saw the squirrel again a few days after the first shocking sight of him. The swelling had gone down, and it was less of a wound and more of a scab. At the bottom the wound was draining. He looked better, actually but I haven't seen him again for about 3 days. I wonder what has happened to him and if being totally blind on one side has made him easy prey.
But for the time I was with him, I again felt very honored by his trust. This time he stayed at about face level with me and about 18 inches from me. He didn't bother to take a nut and move away with it. He stayed right where he was and he kept his blind side toward me. Clearly I "had his back" and he wasn't wasting his precious vision on someone who meant him no harm.
I'll tell you, you don't get that kind of rock-bottom trust from humans a lot of the time.
